  27. Thumbs Up, Adaptec! for Windows is a method by which Adaptec can distribute
  28. to you the latest information on Adaptec products. Microsoft Windows v3.1 is
  29. required.  Thumbs Up for Windows features:

  31. o  Easy to use Query feature to find information by keyword
  32. o  Ability to save individual queries for quick access later
  33. o  Table of Contents feature displays the title of each available document 
  34. o  The information is easily updated by installing new databases
  35. o  The information can be exported to a file and saved or printed
  36. o  The information can be faxed (by printing to your fax card)  
  37. o  On board help for the Alchemy search engine is available           
  38.  
  39. And best of all, this program is free of charge.

  43.  2.  Installing the program

  46. The program is distributed on one floppy, or in a file on the Adaptec BBS.
  47. To install it, insert the diskette into your computer, and use Microsoft
  48. Windows to run SETUP.EXE.  After running SETUP.EXE, follow the directions
  49. on your screen.

  51. The SETUP program will create a 'Thumbs Up Adaptec' group, and will add 
  52. three icons:  'Thumbs Up Adaptec', 'READADP.TXT', and 'Thumbs Up Lite Source'.

  54.  Thumbs Up Adaptec is the main program, explained in detail below.

  56.  READADP.TXT is the text that you are reading now.

  58.  Thumbs Up Lite Source is a Microsoft Word for Windows v2.0 file containing
  59.   the source to the 'Thumbs Up Lite' booklet.  This is the same information
  60.   that is found in the Thumbs Up for Windows program.  This is provided so 
  61.   that you can print out and bind the information into a booklet, if you so
  62.   desire.

  66.  3.  How to use this program

  69. Click on the 'Thumbs Up Adaptec' icon to begin.

  71. The first time that you run the program, you will need to select a database.
  72. Databases are given version numbers, so that you can know which one has the
  73. latest information.  Double click on the database that you want to use.

  77.  4.  Using the Query Feature

  80. To use the query feature, click on the Q. at the top left of the program. 
  81. The Query dialog box will appear.  In the document content box, select the
  82. keyword or keywords that you want to search for.  Things like AND, OR, and
  83. wildcard characters are supported.  Read the Alchemy Windows Help program
  84. for more details.

  86. For example, if you wanted to know what PCI products were available from 
  87. Adaptec, enter in PCI PRODUCT in the Document Content: box.  The following
  88. document will appear: PCI Local Bus Products Available from Adaptec.

  90. Double click on it to view the document.

  94.  5.  Saving Queries

  97. Queries can be saved for easy access.  This could be useful if the query is
  98. of information that is frequently accessed, or if the query is somewhat 
  99. complex.  To save a query, click on the 'Save...' dialog box from within
  100. the Query screen.  Give the query a name, then click on 'Save'.

  102. To display all saved queries, click on the Q. with the white box around it
  103. next to the Q. for query box.

  107.  6.  Displaying the Table of Contents

  110. To display the Table of Contents, click on the Table of Contents icon at the 
  111. top to the screen, or from the menu bar select Search, Table of Contents.

  113. The information is divided up into folders.  Each folder has different types
  114. of information loaded, depending on the database installed.  Double click
  115. on any document to select and view it.

  119.  7.  Looking for keywords once a document is selected

  122. Once you have selected a document, you can use the Find feature to look
  123. for keywords within that document.  To use the find feature, select the
  124. desired document, then click on the binoculars icon just to the left of the 
  125. help icon (top right of screen), or select Edit, Find... from the menu bar.

  132. As information changes over time, new databases will be created with updated 
  133. information.  Since each database has a version number, it will be easy to 
  134. know which has the latest information (i.e. the largest version number has 
  135. the latest information).  New databases on different subjects may also be 
  136. made available.

  138. To install a new database, copy it into the C:\THUMBSUP subdirectory (or
  139. the appropriate subdirectory if changed from the default).  Select the new
  140. database as described in section 3. of this READADP.TXT file.
