2. Installing the program
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The program is distributed on one floppy, or in a file on the Adaptec BBS.
To install it, insert the diskette into your computer, and use Microsoft
Windows to run SETUP.EXE. After running SETUP.EXE, follow the directions
on your screen.
The SETUP program will create a 'Thumbs Up Adaptec' group, and will add
three icons: 'Thumbs Up Adaptec', 'READADP.TXT', and 'Thumbs Up Lite Source'.
Thumbs Up Adaptec is the main program, explained in detail below.
READADP.TXT is the text that you are reading now.
Thumbs Up Lite Source is a Microsoft Word for Windows v2.0 file containing
the source to the 'Thumbs Up Lite' booklet. This is the same information
that is found in the Thumbs Up for Windows program. This is provided so
that you can print out and bind the information into a booklet, if you so
desire.

3. How to use this program
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Click on the 'Thumbs Up Adaptec' icon to begin.
The first time that you run the program, you will need to select a database.
Databases are given version numbers, so that you can know which one has the
latest information. Double click on the database that you want to use.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
4. Using the Query Feature
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
To use the query feature, click on the Q. at the top left of the program.
The Query dialog box will appear. In the document content box, select the
keyword or keywords that you want to search for. Things like AND, OR, and
wildcard characters are supported. Read the Alchemy Windows Help program
for more details.
For example, if you wanted to know what PCI products were available from
Adaptec, enter in PCI PRODUCT in the Document Content: box. The following
document will appear: PCI Local Bus Products Available from Adaptec.
Double click on it to view the document.

5. Saving Queries
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Queries can be saved for easy access. This could be useful if the query is
of information that is frequently accessed, or if the query is somewhat
complex. To save a query, click on the 'Save...' dialog box from within
the Query screen. Give the query a name, then click on 'Save'.
To display all saved queries, click on the Q. with the white box around it
next to the Q. for query box.

6. Displaying the Table of Contents
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
To display the Table of Contents, click on the Table of Contents icon at the
top to the screen, or from the menu bar select Search, Table of Contents.
The information is divided up into folders. Each folder has different types
of information loaded, depending on the database installed. Double click
on any document to select and view it.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
7. Looking for keywords once a document is selected
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Once you have selected a document, you can use the Find feature to look
for keywords within that document. To use the find feature, select the
desired document, then click on the binoculars icon just to the left of the
help icon (top right of screen), or select Edit, Find... from the menu bar.

8. About Databases
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
As information changes over time, new databases will be created with updated
information. Since each database has a version number, it will be easy to
know which has the latest information (i.e. the largest version number has
the latest information). New databases on different subjects may also be
made available.
To install a new database, copy it into the C:\THUMBSUP subdirectory (or
the appropriate subdirectory if changed from the default). Select the new
database as described in section 3. of this READADP.TXT file.

9. Technical Support / Comments / Suggestions
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Your comments are appreciated, and will be considered when developing future
databases. For example, if you were looking for Adaptec information that
was not in a particular database, let me know and I'll try to add it in the
future.
